Disaster Disaster!

Well after slaving away getting my dress finished in time for my shoot today I faced a massive problem which set me back about a million times. I stupidly never checked the heat of my iron at homw when going to do the hems and melted the fabric! So my relation with the iron is no 0 and I have no self confidence with it at all. So this morning as soon as I got to college I got straight onto it and re patterned that piece, and I managed to fix it and do all the hems in time. So by now the disaster was over and I got cracking on the make up and hair for my model, I decided I wanted really natural hair and natural makeup just with a bright lip to give it a pop.

This Is Not A Swan

I came across this photo shoot and I really fell in love with it! I love the way the illustration and collage is used with it. The photographer is Marc Hibbert and the styling is done by Mariner German. I think its very upbeat and fun, its very contemporary which I like. I am going to use this as inspiration for my shoot for my Giles Deacon dress.

Miley Cryus VS Fern Cotton

This is about the hair obviously! A brief background of my not so repunzel like hair...

Lets say January last year I had the Frankie Sandford short hair look and I loved until the whole of the country decided they wanted short hair like that so I had to start growing it which I did and it got a short bob length by Mid summer. So I thought great I love the ombre look on short hair so off I trotted to the hair dressers putting all my trust into them and out I came crying, it was god damn awful and my hair was as nearly as short as I started with in January. Leaving it until now has been the best thing I could have done, it feels so health and thick, I have had the odd trim and I even ventured back to the ombre (which has now gone again haha) and now I AM BORED!!!!!!

Its a lot longer than it was and its at an awkward length where my layers are nearly as long as my hair but not quite so I'm debating to get it all cut one length and go for the Miley Cyrus look or get it styled like Fern Cottons.... and to clarify with you all I AM RUBBISH AT MAKING DISCUSSIONS

So please help me it will be must appreciated or I could just leave it alone haha

Style crush- Cara Delevingne

Little miss popular hey Cara? The past few years Cara Delevingne has taken to the catwalks all over the world from modelling for Burberry to Chanel and even becoming an VS Angel this girl knows how to work the fashion industry! And me, myself can only wish to be her! Ok yes I cant say I don't have her on Twitter or Instagram because I do and she comes across such a character in herself, funny and beautiful.. Who doesn't want to be her??

 Her style is very different and her day to day looks I have seen seem to be very casual and relaxed but still she has that little edge to her which I likey. Her dark dark eyebrows and light blonde hair makes everyone just fall for her (''Justin Bieber the believer'' defiantly likes her as seen at this years VS show). She has a beautiful tiny figure with amazingly long legs which Im sure is why she gets scouted from ear to ear! I really don't think Cara's schedule is going to be quiet during Fashion week this year either. So for know ill just carry on dreaming I am her!

Pattern cutting- 2

So carrying on from last week (see in this post) we were continuing to pattern for our 60s inspired dress. I had finished patterning the basics and was onto the features.

Pleats in my skirt

1. This is where I was up to from last week, which meant I needed to finish off the 3rd pleat and do a final pattern for the front of the skirt and start the back pattern.

 2. The finished pleats. To create the pleats you have to draw out the skirt pattern with your pleats drawn in, cut down the line of the first pleat, leave a 1.5cm gap and draw a line. Then fold over the pleat onto the line you have drawn and do that 3 times. 

3. Once the pleats were complete we needed to draw out the final pattern pieces which meant we needed to iron out the pleats so that the paper is flat, by doing this it allows you to get the right measurements. To get the final pattern we had to trace around the pattern piece then add a 1cm seam allowance.

4. When drawing out the pleats we needed to make sure we didn't draw every line, to make sure I never did that I labelled them with stars. But without the starts I remembered which lines we needed to draw by thinking  'just the ones we stuck down' haha.

 5. When we first started patterning I decided I would have pleats in the back of my skirt as well, that meant I had to repeat that task again to the get the same outcome for my back. This is what my final pieces look like.

Neck facing 

6. The next feature of the garment we needed to do was the neck facing, which is used to make the neckline look more slick and tidy and its also used on the back of garments. To pattern for one of these it's really simple all you need to do is draw a curved line 5cm down from the neck line making sure it joins with the shoulder. 

7. It's really that simple!! then you have to trace it to get a final patter piece and add a 1cm seam allowance around both the corners and the top leaving the bottom line free of a seam allowance, then you need to go a head and add you 3 lines of information- we did this by adding our names, what the pattern piece was called and how many times we needed it cutting out. We also needed to makes sure we had added a grain line and to make sure if we needed C.F line we put one in. 

Sleeve

8. The last feature we needed to pattern was of course the sleeve. To do this it meant we needed to draw around a sleeve block. To start with we needed to check if the sleeve would fit our pattern, once we had drawn around the outline of the block then we needed to draw in the underarm line (the 1st line) and then the elbow line (3rd line) making sure we had traced in the notches. Next came choosing how long we wanted the sleeve to be, I decided I didn't want my sleeve to be a little cap sleeve I wanted it to be a little bit longer so I draw my line at 8cm from the underarm line. To get a final pattern for this we had to trace the shape of the sleeve to the line we had drawn (mine being the 2nd line) then adding a 1cm seam allowance all the way around and putting the correct information on to it. And voilà, my first dress pattern!!!!! Now for the cutting..


Cutting the pattern

When choosing my fabric I had in mind using a pattern for some of the features of my dress for two reasons 1 being, I want them to stand out and 2 being, I don't want to be boring haha. So with these thoughts in the back of my head when I seen this tartan I couldn't leave it behind as recently I have a love for everything tartan. Literally everything I own seams to have the pattern on from my trousers to my shoes to my scarf (don't worry I don't clash them all together).

9. Here is one of my neck facing pattern pieces pinned to the fabric I am using. When cutting out a patterned piece you need to make sure the peiece is pinned down in the right place making sure it is properly flat, also you need to look out for the information wrote down on the piece and follow the instructions. A big thing also is to save fabric!!! It isn't CHEAP. SO by placing the pattern pieces on to the fabric in a way so it saves helps a lot in industry as it brings the manufacturing price down. 

  
10. After I had cut C.F neck facing out from pattern piece, I placed my other pieces on in a way that has left me with at least half of my fabric left! Which makes it worth while as I can now go onto use it for something else.

I got up to the point of pinning down the final dress pieces so after the christmas holidays I will continues to cutting out the pieces and start manufacturing (exciting!!)

M&S Christmas

With Christmas advert being shown almost everywhere I thought I would look into one more than just watching it on TV. Usually I probably would have chosen the Coca Cola advert because that defines christmas adverts but no, I wanted to be different and chose a not so popular one. I thought the M&S one was a good example as it has a few different scenes throughout and tells a good story but is know where near as soppy as the John Lewis advert (my mum cried watching it.....).

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

The first scene shows a range of women- All different ages chucking snow balls which would usually be the children doing so it kind of represents fun and youth. They are all wearing different wooly jumpers and a range of knitwear,  the clothing colours are all shown to be Christmasy and of course red!! The background is shown to be set in a park that has snow covered all over which is obviously were there got the snow balls from (durrr). 

Mr Big Stuff

This scene shows office wear- which makes you think you need to make a good effort to be stylish and set a good example at christmas. They are shown to all be wearing heels and lipstick which could suggest they are treating work like a party because its bright and bold lipstick. The colours are shown to be pink which could apply that the women are bosses when it comes to Christmas. there is only one male shown and he could represent the boss figure and the women need to impress him as he looks as if he is he looking at them. the last clip in this scene looks as if the women are walking out which could suggest they are going home and not working anymore over Christmas and are going out to party e.g. the works christmas doo. 

I Need You Tonight

In this scene the woman are ready to go out and party!!! The age range if woman show that they are ready to go out and party, there clothes are shown to be stylish and modern but still right for all there ages. Christmas is about the parties!

Lady Marmalade

Pyjamas, you cant go wrong with especially around christmas. Comfy and stylish are shown to be here and of course there all red and white which is super cute for Christmas! The women are shown t be having fun jumping about then the last shot of them is going on to stand powerful but show tiredness as well as if they have had a busy time.

Celebration

It then goes on to a new scene showing nothing but kids celebrating and dancing along! This remind me of a school disco or almost like they have skipped along and jumped to new years and as if they are at a party celebrating. There shown to all be dress smart and stylish but still showing the (I'm a child I need something cute and comfy) look. The gold background suggests to me money and wealth, which could mean Christmas is an expensive time but still M&S is affordable. 

They defiantly cater for there huge target market that M&S have in this advert, this is done by using the range of different aged people through out. Really think this advert works well and covers a lot of events that take place over Christmas and shows that the company overs everything you need over the festive period, you cant beat a M&S Christmas and I cant wait for my Christmas dinner. 

p.s I like M&S percy pigs... hint hint
