2nd time around

This was my second day in college doing fashion design and I can happily say I enjoyed every minute just like yesterday so I am excited for September now (fingers crossed time will fly).

Drawing Techniques

In my post yesterday I shown you the manikin designs we did using paper, bobble wrap and bin bags to create shapes and a design. So by doing that we were then able to do some detailed drawings from them. Now I can draw and I have done all kinds of art all the way through school from year 9 up to year 12 but I have never done a drawing of an object in front of me which is strange and I am not sure why I haven't done it before but hey ho there is always time to learn.

To start with we learnt how to use the line technique using a pencil, this is where you have one  eye closed and your arm out straight in front of you which allows you to get the right angles of the lines to get an accurate drawing, I got this pretty quick once I had seen it being done and it seemed t work for me once i got the hang of it. We then went on to doing the proportions and I just couldn't get it to click!! It was so frustrating but I sort of got it in the end and by the end of the session I became a tad more daring which was a good thing.

The techniques I have learnt today I think will stay with me and defiantly improve over the next 2 years! Its all about practice I have been told so my summer is going to be full with drawing and more drawing and most probably some fun!

The taster days I have been to over the last few days have been really really helpful and have got me set for September. They have just put all the pieces together on what we will be doing and what it will all be like. At the moment the college I am going to is going under a big move as they have an all new building opening in September which is good news for me! I am sure I will pop some pictures up of all the new fashion rooms and things we have! So that is it until I start properly, I cant put into words on how much I am looking forward to it and it all helps that I have met some of the people will be working with and there all really nice. Really I would of never of thought I would be looking forward to education this much.

Lets go

I'm Meg, I love anything fashion related and this is a blog that's going to record my progress and inspirations throughout my two year fashion design course. This is my first taste on my new course...

Shape Development

My shape development work, half annotated
As you can see from the image above I have been pretty busy learning about shape development. Before I started today I had never covered shape development so it was something completley new to me, I never really understood what it was until now. I chose images from a theme which was Egypt and photocopied them in different sizes. After drawing out a set of four figures I then cut out the images I thought would give me inspiration and fit to the figure to create ideas for garments.

I like this way of working as it sets off all different types of ideas that you would never usually think of.

I think my theme Egypt was trickier than i thought it would be as some of the shapes didn't fit right to the figures but I think the edging, textures and different shapes helped create some good inspiration and ideas.

I cant say I didn't like anything if I am honest as I learnt some very useful skills that I think will help me develop my designs.

Shapes and Manikins

I have created a design on a manikin using paper, bobble wrap and bin bag squares and pins!

The front on my manikin
We each got given a shape to work with and I got given squares which I thought would be easy, as I started cutting out the paper shapes, the way of pinning the paper to the manikin just came to me it was a bit like trail and error. I pined the paper portrait and I just let it hang over so it would create a full effect. At first I started off using just paper but thought it needed a splash of colour to make it more creative and I think it works well. The bobble wrap gives it a great texture.

Embellishment
I new this design needed something over the shoulder to give an all round effect but wasn't sure what and what I could make out of squares, I decided to make some 3D cubes. I attached them in a way so that they gets bigger as it gets to the top of the shoulder.

The left side of my manikin square design
I only mainly worked on the left side of the manikin, I did this so that it wouldn't lose the shoulder detail in all of the other pieces of the design.

If I was to make this design out of materials I think it would have to be a very structured garment using a range of different but wearable materials like I have used paper, bobble wrap and bin bag plastic. One thing I didn't like about making this was the using the pins with no tops, they hurt my thumbs but that just me being a fuss pot!

I am very happy with design and i really enjoyed making it and just shows that you can make anything out or anything, from squares to bin bags!

Tomorrow we will be drawing our designs on from the manikin onto large cards to show our drawing skills. I really enjoyed my first day as a fashion student and I cant wait for tomorrow or September!
